CULT: Aleister Crowley & the Chamber of Nightmares 04 Nov 2026

In 1920 Aleister Crowley rented a farmhouse above Cefalù in Sicily and called it the Abbey of Thelema, a school for unlearning everything society had taught you. Residents greeted the sun four times a day, took whatever drugs he handed them, and cut their forearms whenever they said the word I. He made every one of them keep a diary of what they did and what they wanted, and he read all of it. When a 22-year-old Oxford graduate died there in 1923, his widow went to the London papers, and within a month Crowley was the wickedest man in the world. Almost nothing they printed was true, and what the diaries record is smaller and much worse. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson traces the school Crowley said he was building, the year that broke the people inside it, and why the legend outgrew everything the diaries record. Please note, this episode contains descriptions of drug addiction, self-harm, the death of a child, and a miscarriage, and may not be suitable for all audiences. CRIME: Ed Gein: Two Murders, Three Horror Films 02 Nov 2026

In November 1957, police in Plainfield, Wisconsin went looking for a missing hardware store owner, Bernice Worden, and found her body in a shed behind Ed Gein's farmhouse. Inside the house, they found furniture, clothing and keepsakes made from human remains. Gein admitted killing Worden and a tavern owner named Mary Hogan, and to robbing more than 40 graves. He was found unfit to stand trial; when he was tried in 1968, a judge convicted him of a single murder and found him legally insane. He died in a state hospital in 1984. In the meantime, his farmhouse had reshaped American horror three times over, in the films Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson examines the two women Ed Gein admitted killing, the farmhouse that made him a legend, and how a case with one conviction became the template for half a century of American horror. Please note, this episode contains descriptions of extreme violence and may not be suitable for all audiences. CRIME: Hex Hollow: The York Witch Trial 30 Oct 2026

On Thanksgiving Eve in 1928, three men broke into a farmhouse in Rehmeyer's Hollow, an area of York County, Pennsylvania known locally as Hex Hollow, looking for a book. Nelson Rehmeyer was a farmer and a practitioner of powwow, a Pennsylvania Dutch folk-healing tradition, and he had once cured one of the intruders as a child. John Blymire was convinced that Rehmeyer was the witch who had hexed him, and that burning Rehmeyer's copy of a folk-magic book called The Long Lost Friend would lift the curse. The three men beat Rehmeyer to death and set his body alight. The trial that followed, covered nationally as the York witch trial, put a 200-year-old belief system in front of a jury. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson traces the powwow tradition Nelson Rehmeyer practiced, the curse three men believed had ruined their lives, and the trial that asked a courtroom to take witchcraft seriously as a motive for murder. CULT: The Process Church: Christ and Satan 28 Oct 2026

Founded in London in the mid-1960s by two former Scientologists, Robert de Grimston and Mary Ann MacLean, the Process Church of the Final Judgment taught that Christ and Satan were not opposites but complementary forces to be reconciled. Members wore black robes with a goat emblem, traveled with German Shepherds, and sold apocalyptic magazines with titles like Fear and Humanity is the Devil on the streets of London, New York, Chicago and New Orleans. They built a commune on the Yucatan, recruited from the counterculture, and attracted contributions from Marianne Faithfull and Funkadelic. Then their magazine ran an interview with the imprisoned Charles Manson, and the group spent the next fifty years attached to a rumor it fought in court. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson unravels the theology of a church that worshipped both Christ and Satan, the communes and celebrity admirers it collected on two continents, and how a single chapter in a 1971 book tied it to the Manson murders long after a publisher retracted the claim. CONSPIRACY THEORY: Amityville: Hoax or Haunting? 26 Oct 2026

In November 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot and killed six members of his family in their house on Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York. Thirteen months later, George and Kathy Lutz moved in with their three children and left after 28 days, describing green slime, swarms of flies, a demonic pig and voices in the walls. The book that followed sold in the millions and launched one of the most profitable horror franchises in history. Then the story started coming apart, and the word attached to it was hoax: neighbors reported nothing, and investigators found no records supporting key events. DeFeo's own defense attorney later said he and George Lutz had invented much of it over several bottles of wine. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson revisits the murders that came first, the 28 days the Lutzes always insisted were real, and the question the case has never fully shaken: how much of the most famous haunting in America was ever true? Please note, this episode contains descriptions of extreme violence and may not be suitable for all audiences. CRIME: Danny Rolling: The Killer Who Inspired Scream 23 Oct 2026

Over four days in August 1990, five students were murdered near the University of Florida campus in Gainesville. Their names were Sonja Larson, Christina Powell, Christa Hoyt, Tracy Paules and Manuel Taboada. The killings emptied the town, sent students home mid-semester, and produced a manhunt that arrested the wrong man before DNA and a cassette tape recovered from a wooded campsite identified a drifter named Danny Rolling. The press called him the Gainesville Ripper. He pleaded guilty in 1994, later admitted to a triple murder in Shreveport, Louisiana, and was executed in 2006. Along the way, a young screenwriter named Kevin Williamson saw a news report about the case, and it inspired him to write Scream. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson traces the five students Gainesville lost, the investigation that took a wrong turn before it found him, and the uneasy afterlife of a case that became one of the most successful horror franchises ever made. Please note, this episode contains descriptions of extreme violence and sexual violence and may not be suitable for all audiences. CULT: Human Sacrifice: The Wicker Man 21 Oct 2026

Around 53 BC, Julius Caesar wrote that the Gauls built enormous human figures out of woven branches, filled them with living people, and set them alight. That passage, written by a general describing the enemy he was conquering, became the foundation of one of the most durable images in Western imagination: the wicker man. Later readers called it the wicker man, and it has since been a horror film, a music festival, and a shorthand for pagan savagery. What it has never been is archaeologically settled. Roman writers had every reason to describe the Celts as barbarians, and the physical evidence for ritual killing in Iron Age Europe is real but stranger and more ambiguous than a giant burning effigy. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson explores what Caesar claimed, what the archaeology of Iron Age human sacrifice does and does not support, and why a two-thousand-year-old story about a Celtic ritual refuses to die. CONSPIRACY THEORY: Annabelle: The Warrens' Haunted Doll 19 Oct 2026

In 1970, a nursing student in Connecticut was given a Raggedy Ann doll for her birthday. Within weeks she and her roommate believed it was moving around their apartment on its own, leaving handwritten notes, and attacking a friend. They called Ed and Lorraine Warren, the self-described demonologists who would later become the most famous paranormal investigators in America. The Warrens declared the doll haunted by a demonic presence, took it home, and sealed it in a glass case in their occult museum in Monroe, Connecticut. Fifty years later, a Hollywood franchise had made the doll a household name, the museum had been closed by zoning officials, and Annabelle was touring the country in front of paying crowds. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson explores the young women whose story started it all, the investigators who built a career on it, and the strange afterlife of a child's toy that became one of the most feared objects in the world. CRIME: The Astronaut Love Triangle 16 Oct 2026

Early on February 5th, 2007, Air Force captain Colleen Shipman was walking to her car at Orlando International Airport when a woman in a wig and a trench coat followed her, banged on her window, and sprayed a chemical through the gap. The woman was Lisa Nowak, a NASA astronaut who had flown aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery seven months earlier. Nowak had driven roughly 900 miles from Houston to confront the woman now dating her former lover, a fellow astronaut, in a case the tabloids named the astronaut love triangle. Police found a knife, a mallet, a BB gun and latex gloves in her car. She was charged with attempted murder, and became the first astronaut NASA ever fired. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson traces the two decades of work that put Lisa Nowak in orbit, the obsession that unravelled her in a matter of weeks, and what the case forced NASA to admit about the mental health of the people it sends into space. CULT: The Family: Australia's LSD Cult 14 Oct 2026

In the hills outside Melbourne, Australia, a yoga teacher named Anne Hamilton-Byrne convinced several hundred followers that she was Jesus Christ. Her members were not dropouts: they were doctors, lawyers, nurses, psychiatrists and social workers, and at one point they effectively controlled a private psychiatric hospital that fed her new recruits. Between 1969 and 1975, she collected 14 children who were not hers, registered every one as her own birth, and raised them behind a barbed-wire fence at a property on Lake Eildon. Their hair was bleached identical shades of blonde. They were starved, beaten, and dosed with sedatives, and at 14 they were given LSD in an initiation ritual. Police did not go through the gate until August 1987. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson traces how one woman assembled a family out of other people's babies, the professional network that made the paperwork possible, and the survivors who brought the whole thing down after every institution around them failed. Please note, this episode contains descriptions of child abuse and discussion of suicide and may not be suitable for all audiences. CONSPIRACY THEORY: The Mandela Effect 12 Oct 2026

In 2009, at a science fiction convention in Atlanta, a paranormal researcher named Fiona Broome discovered that strangers shared her vivid memory of Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s. Mandela walked free in 1990 and died in 2013. Broome named it the Mandela Effect, and the catalogue grew: a children's book spelled wrong, a logo with a horn that never existed, a Sinbad genie movie nobody made. Believers concluded that reality had been edited and their memories were souvenirs of a lost timeline. Then in 2022, University of Chicago researchers put the phenomenon in a lab, confirmed that huge numbers of strangers share the same specific false memories, and reported no clear explanation for why. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa examines the false memories millions of people share, the parallel-universe and CERN theories built to explain them, and the uncomfortable question underneath all of it: is it scarier to live in an edited universe or to have a mind that cannot be trusted? CRIME: Britain's First Female Serial Killer: Mary Ann Cotton 09 Oct 2026

Long before the name Jack the Ripper struck fear into Victorian England, a respectable-looking widow named Mary Ann Cotton was quietly killing her way through the north of the country. By the time investigators caught up with her in 1872, she had outlived four husbands, a lover, and eleven of her own children, nearly all of them poisoned with arsenic and many insured for cash. Hiding in plain sight behind the mask of a grieving mother and wife, she is now considered Britain's first known serial killer, and one of its most overlooked. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson uncovers the chilling story of Mary Ann Cotton, the string of deaths that followed her from town to town, and how a woman managed to murder on such a staggering scale for so long before anyone noticed. CULT: When Prophecy Fails: The Seekers 07 Oct 2026

In 1954, a housewife in Oak Park, Illinois named Dorothy Martin began taking down messages from beings she called the Guardians, and told the small circle around her that a flood would destroy the middle of North America before dawn on December 21st. Flying saucers would collect the believers first. The group, who called themselves the Seekers, gave away possessions and quit jobs, and on the night of the 20th pulled every scrap of metal off their clothes and sat down to wait. Three social psychologists led by Leon Festinger were sitting in the room under false names. Their 1956 book about that night, When Prophecy Fails, gave the world the phrase cognitive dissonance and is still assigned in classrooms. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson examines the prophecy Dorothy Martin took down from the Guardians, the researchers who joined under false names, and the private archive that undid a study taught in classrooms for 70 years. CONSPIRACY THEORY: Is Anyone Real Anymore? The Dead Internet Theory 05 Oct 2026

In 2021, an anonymous forum post floated a theory that sounded absurd: the internet effectively died around 2016, and most of what we now see online, the posts, comments, arguments, and trends, is generated by bots and AI designed to manipulate what we think, buy, and believe. People laughed, until the evidence started piling up. Bots surpassed human traffic online for the first time in 2024, more than a third of new websites are now AI-generated, and state actors run thousands of fake accounts to shape public opinion. With every passing month, the idea that the internet is fake looks less like a conspiracy theory and more like a description of reality. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa examines the Dead Internet Theory, the mounting signs that much of the online world is no longer human, and the unsettling question of what happens to a society that can no longer tell the difference. CRIME: Victor Lustig: He Sold the Eiffel Tower Twice 02 Oct 2026

In 1925, a con man calling himself Count Victor Lustig read that the Eiffel Tower was costly to maintain. He took a suite at one of the best hotels in Paris and invited five scrap dealers to a confidential meeting. On stationery bearing a government seal, he introduced himself as a ministry official, said the state had secretly decided to demolish it, and offered them its 7,000 tons of iron. One dealer paid, and was too humiliated to report it. So Lustig came back and ran it again. He went on to sell a fake money-printing machine to a Texas sheriff, take $5,000 off Al Capone, and print so much counterfeit cash that the Secret Service named it for him. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson traces the ten rules Victor Lustig wrote down for deceiving people, the confidence trick that sold a national monument twice, and the jealous phone call that finally put the smoothest con man in America inside Alcatraz. CULT: The Church Universal and Triumphant 30 Sep 2026

In the 1980s, a charismatic woman named Elizabeth Clare Prophet convinced thousands of followers that she was channeling messages from Jesus, Buddha, and a spiritual entity called Saint Germain, and that nuclear apocalypse was imminent. Her devotees sold their homes, quit their jobs, and moved to a sprawling 12,000-acre compound beside Yellowstone National Park, where the church built an enormous underground bunker system stocked with weapons and supplies. On March 15th, 1990, some seven thousand people descended into the shelters to wait for the end of the world, only to emerge the next morning to find everything exactly as they'd left it, except their savings and their old lives were gone. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson examines the woman her followers called Mother, the doomsday prophecy that convinced thousands to bury themselves alive, and what happened when they had to dig their way back to reality. CONSPIRACY THEORY: Aviation Industry Whistleblowers 28 Sep 2026

John Barnett spent 32 years at Boeing before going public with alarming claims about faulty oxygen masks, substandard parts, and a corporate culture that punished anyone who dared to speak up. In March 2024, in the middle of giving deposition testimony against the company, he was found dead in a hotel parking lot from a gunshot wound. Less than two months later, Joshua Dean, a 45-year-old quality auditor who had flagged the very manufacturing defects Boeing later admitted to, died within two weeks of a sudden infection after being perfectly healthy. Both men shared the same attorney, both had documented retaliation, and a manager had once told Barnett he would push him until he broke. In the aftermath, more than ten new whistleblowers came forward. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson examines what Boeing knew, how it treated the people who tried to expose the truth, and the unsettling question the company has never answered: why do the people who speak up keep dying? CRIME: MH370 25 Sep 2026

On March 8th, 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 vanished from the sky with 239 people aboard, disappearing during a routine flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The plane's transponder went dark, it changed course over the ocean, and then it was simply gone, triggering the largest and most expensive search in aviation history. In the years since, theories have multiplied, ranging from deliberate pilot sabotage to hijacking to a military cover-up, but despite scattered debris washing ashore, the main wreckage has never been found. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson investigates the disappearance of MH370, the baffling final hours of the flight, and the many competing theories about how a modern airliner could vanish almost without a trace. CULT: The Thule Society: The Secret Group That Birthed the Nazi Party 16 Sep 2026

In the aftermath of World War I, a secretive occult group emerged in Germany called the Thule Society, blending Norse mythology, racial mysticism, and extreme nationalism into a dangerous new ideology. Its members believed in a master race descended from a mythical northern homeland, and their obsession with ancestry and bloodline would seep directly into the beliefs of the fledgling Nazi Party. Though the society itself faded, its ideas and several of its members helped shape one of history's darkest movements. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson explores the Thule Society, the toxic fusion of myth and extremism that gave it life, and the chilling way an obscure occult club helped plant the seeds of Nazi ideology. CONSPIRACY: What Is Denver Airport Hiding? 14 Sep 2026

Since it opened in 1995, Denver International Airport has been the subject of some of the most enduring conspiracy theories in America. Built years behind schedule and wildly over budget, the airport is famous for its unsettling apocalyptic murals, a towering demonic horse statue with glowing red eyes, cryptic dedication plaques, and a sprawling network of underground tunnels. To believers, these details point to secret bunkers for the elite, headquarters for shadowy organizations, or something even stranger hidden beneath the runways. Officials insist the tunnels are mundane and the art is simply misunderstood, but the speculation has only grown over the decades, embraced even by the airport itself. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson explores the many theories surrounding Denver International Airport, the strange design choices that started it all, and the question of why one airport became a magnet for suspicion about hidden power and secret agendas. CRIME: Who Killed JonBenét? 11 Sep 2026

In December 1996, 6-year-old beauty queen JonBenét Ramsey was found murdered in the basement of her family's home in the quiet mountain town of Boulder, Colorado, in a case that would become one of the most controversial in American history. A bizarre ransom note, a badly mishandled crime scene, and a swirl of suspicion around her own family turned a private tragedy into a national spectacle, with the media declaring the Ramseys guilty long before any evidence could. Nearly three decades later, despite endless theories and renewed DNA testing, no one has ever been charged, and the truth remains buried beneath decades of speculation. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson revisits the JonBenét Ramsey case, the investigative failures that doomed it from the start, and the way a shocking murder shattered the illusion of safety in one seemingly perfect Colorado town. CULT: Power in the Woods: Bohemian Grove 09 Sep 2026

Deep in the redwood forests of Northern California lies Bohemian Grove, a private retreat where some of the most powerful men in the world, presidents, business titans, and political power brokers, have gathered in secret for more than a century. Each summer, members of the exclusive Bohemian Club convene for two weeks of camping, revelry, and a strange opening ritual called the "Cremation of Care," performed before a towering stone owl. That secrecy has fueled decades of speculation, from rumors of occult worship to theories that world-shaping decisions are quietly made around its campfires. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson explores the mysteries of Bohemian Grove, the rituals and rumors that have made it a fixture of conspiracy lore, and the question of what really happens when the world's elite disappear into the woods with no cameras allowed. CONSPIRACY THEORY: Did the CIA Invent Modern Art? 07 Sep 2026

During the Cold War, the CIA quietly turned modern art into a weapon. Convinced that America needed to prove its cultural superiority over the Soviet Union, the agency secretly promoted abstract expressionist painters like Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Willem de Kooning as symbols of American freedom. Through a front group called the Congress for Cultural Freedom and a network of fake foundations, the CIA funneled millions of dollars into touring exhibitions across Europe, partnering with the Museum of Modern Art, all without the artists ever knowing who was funding their success. The irony was staggering: many of the painters were anarchists and former communists, President Truman thought their work was garbage, and Congress called it un-American, yet the CIA bankrolled it anyway. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson examines the declassified operation that transformed paint splatters into propaganda, the strange alliance between spies and the art world, and the unsettling question of whether some of the most celebrated art of the 20th century rose on merit, or because a spy agency decided it was useful. CRIME: LSD & Mind Control: Operation Midnight Climax 04 Sep 2026

In the 1950s and 60s, at the height of the Cold War, the CIA launched a secret program called Operation Midnight Climax as part of its notorious MKUltra mind-control research. Operating out of safehouses in San Francisco and New York, agents used sex workers to lure unwitting men, then dosed them with LSD without their knowledge and observed the results through one-way mirrors. The goal was to study whether psychedelics could be weaponized for interrogation, coercion, and control. What unfolded was a chilling abuse of government power, hidden from the public for decades until investigations finally exposed it. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson investigates Operation Midnight Climax, the Cold War paranoia that drove the CIA to experiment on its own citizens, and the disturbing legacy of a program that treated unsuspecting people as test subjects in the search for a mind-control weapon. CULT: God's Drug Empire: The Brotherhood of Eternal Love 02 Sep 2026

In the late 1960s, a group of California idealists calling themselves the Brotherhood of Eternal Love set out to change the world through psychedelics, believing that LSD could bring about spiritual awakening and universal peace. Inspired by figures like Timothy Leary, the Brotherhood started as a hippie collective but soon became one of the largest drug-smuggling operations in the country, trafficking massive quantities of LSD and hashish across the globe. What began as a utopian dream drifted steadily into a criminal empire, drawing the attention of federal authorities and culminating in a sweeping prosecution. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson explores the rise and fall of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love, the collision between counterculture idealism and organized crime, and the question of whether their mission was ever really about enlightenment, or just about the drugs. CONSPIRACY THEORY: Brazil's UFO Cover-Up: The Varginha Incident feat. Laurah Norton from One Strange Thing 31 Aug 2026

In January 1996, the small Brazilian city of Varginha became the center of one of the most famous UFO stories in South American history. Multiple witnesses, including three young women, reported seeing a strange creature with a large head and red eyes lurking in the streets, while others claimed the military had captured one or more living beings and recovered a crashed craft. As soldiers reportedly swarmed the area and a young military police officer who allegedly handled a creature later died under murky circumstances, the official denials only deepened public suspicion that something was being covered up. To this day, Varginha is often called the "Brazilian Roswell." In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson is joined by Laurah Norton of One Strange Thing to investigate the Varginha incident, the witnesses who swore they saw something otherworldly, and the alleged government cover-up that turned a small city into a permanent fixture of UFO lore. CRIME: Chico Mendes: Killed for the Trees 28 Aug 2026

Chico Mendes was a Brazilian rubber tapper who became one of the world's most important environmental activists, organizing peaceful resistance against the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. By the 1980s, he had drawn international attention to the violent clash between cattle ranchers clearing the forest and the communities who depended on it to survive. His activism made him a global symbol of the fight to save the Amazon, and it also made him a target. In December 1988, Mendes was shot and killed outside his home by a rancher's family, a murder that exposed the deadly stakes of standing between profit and preservation in the Brazilian frontier. His death sparked international outrage and made him a martyr for the environmental movement. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson tells the story of Chico Mendes, the movement he built in the heart of the Amazon, and the land and power struggles that cost him his life. CULT: The Ayahuasca Cult: Santo Daime 26 Aug 2026

Founded in the Brazilian Amazon in the 1930s, Santo Daime is a religion that blends Catholicism, indigenous tradition, and African spirituality around a single sacred sacrament: ayahuasca, a powerful psychedelic brew. During hours-long ceremonies, devotees drink the bitter tea, sing hymns, and describe profound visions, healing, and spiritual enlightenment. The faith has spread far beyond Brazil, drawing followers around the world and sparking legal battles over the religious use of a substance banned in many countries. But alongside the devotion come questions about its rigid structure, the intensity of its rituals, and the line between spiritual practice and something more controlling. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson explores the origins of Santo Daime, the sacred brew at the center of its worship, and the debate over whether it is a legitimate religion, a healing tradition, or something closer to a cult. CONSPIRACY THEORY: The Ark of the Covenant 24 Aug 2026

According to the Bible, the Ark of the Covenant was a gold-covered chest built to hold the Ten Commandments, an object of such immense divine power that it could level cities and strike down anyone who touched it. Then, sometime after the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem, it vanished from history. For thousands of years, the question of what happened to it has fueled legends and obsessive searches, with some claiming it lies hidden in a church in Ethiopia, others pointing to secret chambers beneath Jerusalem, and still others insisting it sits locked away in the vaults of the Vatican. Faith institutions have guarded its mystery for centuries, neither confirming nor denying what they may know. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson explores the legend of the Ark of the Covenant, the competing theories about where it ended up, and the enduring belief that one of history's most powerful relics may still be out there, waiting to be found. CRIME: The Mysterious Murder of Barry & Honey Sherman 21 Aug 2026

In December 2017, billionaire pharmaceutical founder Barry Sherman and his wife Honey were found dead in their Toronto mansion, their bodies posed beside the indoor pool, each hanging from a railing by a belt. Police initially suggested a murder-suicide, a theory the couple's family furiously rejected. As private investigators and a second autopsy revealed the truth, the case was reclassified as a targeted double homicide, the work of someone who had carefully staged the scene. Barry had built the generic drug giant Apotex into a fortune worth billions, leaving behind a tangle of lawsuits, business rivalries, and family disputes. Years later, despite a massive reward and one of the most high-profile investigations in Canadian history, no one has ever been charged. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson examines the killing of Barry and Honey Sherman, the botched early investigation that cost crucial evidence, and the web of money, power, and suspicion surrounding a murder that remains unsolved. CULT: Secrets of Opus Dei 19 Aug 2026

Founded in Spain in 1928, Opus Dei is a Catholic organization built on discipline, secrecy, and the belief that ordinary life can be a path to holiness. Officially recognized and championed by the Vatican, it has counted powerful politicians, judges, and business leaders among its members. But critics, including many former members, describe something far more troubling behind the devotion: rigid control over members' daily lives, pressure and isolation in recruitment, and the practice of corporal mortification, where the most committed members inflict physical pain on themselves as a form of spiritual discipline. Supporters call it a faithful expression of Catholic tradition, while detractors call it a cult operating with the blessing of the Church. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson examines the secretive organization at the heart of the Catholic Church, the line between devotion and control, and the question of how much influence Opus Dei really wields inside the Vatican. CONSPIRACY THEORY: The Pizza Connection 17 Aug 2026

For nearly a decade, the Sicilian Mafia ran the largest heroin pipeline in the world, hiding it inside something as ordinary as the neighborhood pizza parlor. Morphine was bought in Turkey, refined into heroin in Sicily, smuggled into the United States, and sold through family-owned pizzerias across the American Northeast, while the profits were laundered through banks in New York, the Bahamas, and Switzerland. The operation moved an estimated $1.65 billion in drugs before the FBI, aided by an undercover agent who had spent years embedded inside the Bonanno crime family, coordinated arrests across four countries in a single day. The trial that followed lasted seventeen months, one defendant was murdered before it ended, and the star witness became the first made man in history to break the Mafia's code of silence. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson unravels the Pizza Connection, the vast criminal network hidden behind storefront counters, and the investigation that brought it crashing down. CRIME: $200,000 and a Parachute: D.B. Cooper 14 Aug 2026

In November 1971, a man calling himself Dan Cooper boarded a commercial flight in Portland, Oregon, told a flight attendant he had a bomb, and demanded $200,000 and four parachutes. After releasing the passengers in Seattle, he ordered the crew back into the air, then lowered the plane's rear stairs and leapt into the freezing night somewhere over the Pacific Northwest. He was never seen again. The hijacking exposed just how little security existed in the early days of commercial aviation, when passengers boarded without screening and a man in a suit could carry a bomb onto a plane unquestioned. Despite one of the longest investigations in FBI history, no one ever identified him or recovered his body, and only a small portion of the ransom money was ever found. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson revisits the only unsolved skyjacking in American history, the security gaps that made it possible, and the enduring question of who D.B. Cooper really was and whether he survived the jump. CULT: Lords of Darkness: The Hellfire Club 12 Aug 2026

In the 18th century, England's most powerful men, politicians, aristocrats, and intellectuals, gathered behind closed doors for a secret society known as the Hellfire Club. Founded by the wealthy rake Sir Francis Dashwood, the club met in candlelit caves and a converted abbey, where members reportedly indulged in drunken feasts, mock religious ceremonies, and rituals that scandalized polite society. Rumors swirled of devil worship, orgies, and occult rites performed by men who ran the country by day and mocked God by night. But how much of the legend was real, and how much was the inevitable myth that grows around extreme privacy and unchecked power? In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson explores the most notorious secret society of Georgian England, the elite circle that operated beyond the reach of law or church, and the truth hidden beneath centuries of scandalous rumor. CONSPIRACY THEORY: The Princes in the Tower 10 Aug 2026

In 1483, two boys, the 12-year-old King of England and his 9-year-old brother, were placed in the Tower of London by their uncle, who had sworn to protect them. In 1483, two boys, the 12-year-old King of England and his 9-year-old brother, were placed in the Tower of London by their uncle, who had sworn to protect them. Instead, he declared them illegitimate and crowned himself King Richard III. The princes were seen playing in the Tower gardens that summer, and then they vanished. Their uncle had the clearest motive, but so did his closest ally and the man who later overthrew him, leaving three suspects and no confession. In 1674, workers found the skeletons of two children beneath a Tower staircase, bones now sealed in a Westminster Abbey tomb that has repeatedly been denied DNA testing. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson examines one of the oldest cold cases in history, the three suspects who all had reason to want the boys dead, and the mystery modern science could finally solve if anyone would open the tomb. CRIME: Never Caught: Jack the Ripper 07 Aug 2026

In the autumn of 1888, a killer stalked the impoverished streets of London's Whitechapel district, murdering and mutilating at least five women in a matter of weeks. The press dubbed him Jack the Ripper, a name drawn from a taunting letter supposedly sent by the killer himself, and the city descended into panic. The murders exposed the squalor and desperation of Victorian London's East End, where poverty, overcrowding, and inequality left women with few options and little protection. Despite one of the largest manhunts of the era, police never caught him. More than 130 years later, the list of suspects has grown to include everyone from local butchers to royalty, and the case remains the most famous unsolved murder mystery in history. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson revisits the Whitechapel murders, the fear that gripped a divided city, and the endless theories about the identity of the man who was never caught. CULT: Blood and Brotherhood: The Yakuza 05 Aug 2026

For more than a century, the Yakuza have operated as Japan's most powerful organized crime syndicates, hiding in plain sight with corporate offices, business cards, and fan magazines. But beneath the legitimate front is a world bound by ritual, absolute loyalty, and a rigid hierarchy that mirrors the devotion of a cult. New members are initiated through sacred sake ceremonies that bind them to a boss as a kind of father, severing ties to their own families. Those who break the code perform yubitsume, slicing off a fingertip to atone. Full-body tattoos mark a lifetime of belonging that few ever escape. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson examines how Japan's criminal brotherhoods turned obedience into a religion, the rituals that keep members in line, and how a syndicate of tens of thousands operated for decades as something between a corporation and a cult. CONSPIRACY THEORY: The Vanishing Fortune: Lost Confederate Gold 03 Aug 2026

On April 2, 1865, Confederate President Jefferson Davis fled Richmond with the entire Confederate treasury, a fortune in gold ingots, silver bricks, and coins guarded by teenage Navy midshipmen on a train heading south into a collapsing nation. Five weeks later, when Union soldiers finally captured Davis, almost all of it was gone. The War Department told the public the missing treasure was worth $13 million, a number historians say was invented to turn every former Confederate into a hunted man. The truth was far more complicated, with records showing most of the money was paid to soldiers and spent along the way. But the legend never died. Wagons were raided in Georgia, deathbed confessions pointed to buried caches no one ever found, and treasure hunters are still searching 160 years later. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson follows the trail of the lost Confederate gold, the myth the government built around it, and the question that still drives people into the woods with shovels: where did it all go? CRIME: One Bullet, One Nation: The Lincoln Assassination 31 Jul 2026

On the evening of April 14, 1865, just five days after the Confederate surrender at Appomattox, President Abraham Lincoln attended a performance of Our American Cousin at Ford's Theatre in Washington. He was shot in the back of the head by an actor named John Wilkes Booth and died the following morning. But the murder at Ford's Theatre was not a lone gunman's act of revenge. That same night, across the city, other men were carrying out coordinated attacks on the Vice President and the Secretary of State, all part of a wider Confederate conspiracy aimed at decapitating the federal government in a single stroke. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson tells the story of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the men who plotted it, and the night that altered the course of Reconstruction before it began. CULT: Knights of the Golden Circle 29 Jul 2026

In 1854, an adventurer named George Bickley founded a secret society with a singular goal: build a slave empire stretching from the American South through Mexico, Cuba, and the Caribbean. He called it the Knights of the Golden Circle. Within a few years, it had grown into a powerful underground network that pushed secession, seized federal arsenals, and intimidated unionists across the South. Some historians have linked it to early plots against Abraham Lincoln, four years before John Wilkes Booth finished the job. When the war ended, the Knights didn't disband. They went underground, reportedly burying millions in gold across the South to finance a second Civil War that never came. Treasure hunters are still digging. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson examines the secret society that helped start the Confederacy, may have helped kill a president, and left behind a trail of buried gold that no one has fully accounted for. CONSPIRACY THEORY: Thomas Jefferson's Secret Family 27 Jul 2026

In 1802, a journalist reported that President Thomas Jefferson was keeping an enslaved woman named Sally Hemings as a concubine and had fathered her children. Jefferson said nothing. His family denied it. America's most prominent historians dismissed the story for nearly two hundred years. But Hemings' own descendants told a different story, one passed down through generations of oral history that the white historical establishment refused to take seriously. Did the man who wrote the Declaration of Independence have a secret family with a woman he enslaved? And if he did, why did it take the country so long to admit it? In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson revisits one of the most contested questions in American history, and the family that refused to let it go. CRIME: The Donner Party 24 Jul 2026

In the spring of 1846, a group of nearly ninety American pioneers set out from Springfield, Illinois, bound for California. They were farmers, merchants, and families with young children, led by a 60-year-old man named George Donner. They expected to reach the West Coast by autumn. They never made it. After taking an unproven shortcut called the Hastings Cutoff, the party fell weeks behind schedule and was trapped by an early snowstorm high in the Sierra Nevada. By the time the first rescuers reached them in February 1847, nearly half were dead, and stories of what the survivors had done to stay alive would haunt American history for the next century and a half. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson revisits the Donner Party, the choices made in the snow, and the fights over what really happened that still haven't been settled. CULT: Free Love, Total Control: The Oneida Community 22 Jul 2026

In 1848, a preacher named John Humphrey Noyes founded a religious community in upstate New York built around an idea most Americans found unthinkable. At Oneida, traditional marriage was abolished in favor of what Noyes called "complex marriage," a system in which exclusive pairings were forbidden and sexual relationships were governed by the community's leadership. Children were raised collectively. Reproduction was controlled through a program of selective breeding Noyes called stirpiculture. For more than thirty years, the Oneida Community grew, prospered, and held itself out as proof that human beings could live without sin. Then it collapsed. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson explores how one of the most ambitious utopian experiments in American history became one of the strangest, the doctrine of perfection that justified it, and what was really happening inside the community walls. CONSPIRACY THEORY: The MLK Assassination 20 Jul 2026

On April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and killed on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. He was 39 years old. The killing triggered unrest in more than a hundred American cities and altered the course of the civil rights movement. Two months later, a small-time criminal named James Earl Ray was arrested in London and charged with the murder. He pleaded guilty, then almost immediately recanted, claiming he had been part of a larger conspiracy. King's own family eventually came to believe him. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson revisits the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and the questions that have never gone away.
